Itinerary

Sicily, Italy   SORRY THIS RIDE IS NOW FULL

17th – 24th May 2017

The TATARATA – One of the great events in Sicily. Undoubtedly one of the most important horse events in Sicily, the Tatarata is 3 days of fun and fine horses parading the town’s streets in unique style.

Why do we bother to include so much in our horse riding holidays? Simply because our philosophy in life is to enjoy it to the fullest.  We know that horse riding in beautiful landscapes with a multitude of natural and unplanned experiences is such a thrill but we want you to experience all that is the true Sicily and the slow pace of life that the island offers. So we also visit little-known locations and corners of Sicily seldom seen by tourists, look at the place’s interesting stories, connect with nature and enjoy meals out in different typical mountain towns and villages.

The feast is Arab based, with the “Taratata” dance, involving the four quarters of the city in their fighting costumes, and armour jumping dancing movements. This dance is performed in the town square, amidst colour, light and food galore. Naturally, the whole town is closed off for this 3-day feast.
The horse parade, based on the old tradition of marching the battalions through the streets, it now involves all the local horsemen bringing out their very best steeds and marching through the streets in their best riding splendor. The mounts are mostly Arab and Andalusian stallions, many of the highest calibre. Their march through the crowded streets is a spectacle, as the highly strung horses prance and jostle through the throngs of people around them.
The feast also involves processions in period costumes, food stalls with local produce and sweets, as well as the incredible dance itself.

Wednesday – We meet at Coventry  at 1.30pm to arrive at Stansted Airport to catch our flight at 5.10pm to Palermo, arriving at 9.10pm were we will be transported to your hotel, which all have TV en-suite rooms. We will then head out to explore the local town for dinner and drinks.
Thursday – Breakfast, heading off to the ranch in Alia (1.5 hour drive) having a tour of the ranch and the horses, stopping for lunch, heading out for an afternoon ride, making sure we are all happy with our horses. Coming back to relax and enjoying dinner, drinks and late bar in the town.
Friday –  Breakfast, morning ride, lunch on the terrace overlooking the beautiful valley. In the afternoon, we’ll drive to the medieval village of Caccamo, Castle tour with its interesting history. We visit a famous horse training centre. (Here horses are trained for parades etc. Some fantastic horses to be seen). Tonight we will dine at a castle in the town. Finishing off the evening with some drinks at a very pretty local bar.
Saturday – Breakfast, full day ride, as today we ride to a friend’s country house set in the idyllic Sicilian landscape… Here we coral the horses as we settle in for a traditional entirely home cooked Sicilian multi course meal. After a nice “Siesta” we mount once more to head for home. In the evening we relax after the long ride, with nibbles and drinks on the terrace. If in the mood, we can pop out to a small nice pub in the nearby village for some drinks.
Sunday – Ride out after breakfast. We drive to “Corleone” (the famed Mafia town from the “Godfather” film) to visit a photo exhibition on the rise of the Sicilian Mafia. This is a very interesting story highlighting Sicilian culture and an eye-opener to the harships of life. After a walk around Corleone and some drinks, we travel to a town on the way back called “Palazzo Adriano” This is another beautiful town, scene of a couple of famous films. Here we stop for a traditional pizza dinner. From here we drive home.
Monday – Breakfast, morning ride, followed by a traditional BBQ on the terrace, overlooking the Gurfa Valley. In the late afternoon, we break for a while and rest for the long night ahead… In the evening we attend the Tatarata festival with incredible horse parades, street dances, pageants and stalls. Food can be purchased at one of the many excellent stalls or caffes. Late return home.
Tuesday – Breakfast, depending on the announced activities at the Tatarata we can either drive there for the day’s activities or… Ride in the morning followed by a quick light lunch at Pippa’s Paddock and attend the festival in the afternoon. Same as the previous evening we can eat out as and where it occurs. At dusk we go to visit an ancient (2500 years) Arab town which time seems to have forgotten…. And then to dinner in a remote local restaurant
Wednesday – Breakfast, ride out, time for one last lunch overlooking the Blue Mediterranean in an enchanting Castle town on the sea. Transfered back to the airport for our flight at 9.35pm to arrive in Stansted 11.45pm, arriving back in Coventry for 1.30am/2.00am.
