Ballinasloe Horse Fair Ireland 2012
Saturday 29th Sept - Tuesday 2nd Oct

History of the Fair
Every October, Ballinasloe is host to the ancient annual October Fair. Chiefly agricultural in the past, it is now focused on the horse. The Ballinasloe Fair is one of the oldest horse fairs in Europe; bathed in history, it dates back to the 18th century. Today the ever popular fair is still held along with a festival that attracts up to 100,000 visitors from all over the world.

During the fair, the usually quiet town of Ballinasloe is transformed into a sea of horses, cars, trucks, trailers and people.
This is a tradional horse fair held on the Fair Green, only horses can be sold here.

Attractions: Open air music, street entertainment for all the family to enjoy. Market stalls filling many of the streets. Horse and pony lunging competitions and much more to see.

The Prussian and Russian, the Austrian and the French armies came here to buy horses. They were not just acquired for their cavalry role but also for pulling artillery and supply lines.
Napoleon's most famous horse 'Marengo' which he rode at Waterloo was purchased from Ballinasloe Horse Fair in 1799.

Theres's a saying.. 'If your looking for a horse, pony or donkey, if you cant find it at Ballinasloe, there isn't one bred.'

Seeing this sight for the first time, being a horse lover will take your breath away.. and this is only a small part of the Fair!
